All about bmx bikes

  • Kids scooters have been entertaining young children since way beck in the early 1920s. But within the last 10 years Kids scooters popularity has risen enormously! You only have to look out side the local primary school gates to see how popular they have become. There are so many different types of kids scooter available, and they all come in many different kinds of designs and colours. If you child has a favourite carton character or kids TV show, there is probably a scooter designed around it.

They don’t just appeal to young children anymore! Within the last few years they have become trendier and fashionable with teenagers. Older children have realised that they can now perform tricks such as “tail whips” and “bar spins” taken from the BMX world and perform them on scooters. As the scooter and tricks have evolved they have become easier to incorporate from Bikes and boards to scooters. Recently scooters have been in the X-Games and is becoming an extreme sport.

The design of Kids scooters has not changed a great deal since way back when they were first invented. They still consist of a platform with a single wheel at the front to control the steering of the scooter and either one or two wheels at the back, depending on whether you decide to buy a trike or a scooter for your child. One major difference that has changed over the years is what the scooters are made out of Kids scooters are usually made out of light weight aluminum Instead of being made out of wood, and now have a folding mechanism to allow for the kids scooter to be carried around and stored safely. Over the years little extras have been added to scooters to improve the look and feel of scooters including metallic paints, chrome finishes, flashing lights, rear wheel brakes, tough PU wheels and sealed Abec bearings to allow for a smooth ride!

Another popular addition to the Kids scooters family is scooters with little electric motors fulled by re-chargeable batteries or petrol engines at the rear of the scooter. Which allow the scooter to reach speeds of 15mph, and make scooting around town a breeze. What you must remember is that the types of scooters are illegal to use on public roads, as they go to fast for pavements and to slow for roads. If you use one make sure you have an area of land you can use it on. So as you can see, Kids scooters maybe once just been targeted at children but there are models available for all ages!

  • Mountain bikes are specially meant for rough and rugged terrains. These extra traction and shock absorbing mountain bicycles are provided with fat knobby tires. However, a full front and rear suspension is becoming quite a common factor nowadays with bikes meant for mountain rides. Some bikes of this particular variety are fitted with bar ends on the handlebars, but with recent trends the use of handlebars and extensions are becoming less and less popular.

Mountain bicycles have both 26 and 29 inches wheels. The larger wheels of this bike type have better rolling capacities over rocks and boulders. Moreover, wheels, which are larger in diameter, also bring about an enhancement in rotational weight giving way to stable acceleration.

Mountain Bicycles – Kings On Rugged Roads

Based on suspension, mountain bicycles are broadly graded into four different kinds:

Bikes with dual or full suspension – These bikes have front suspension fork and rear suspension with a rear shock and linkage that is ready to make the rear wheels move on pivots

Hardtail bikes – These bikes have frames with no rear suspension and they are often supplied with front suspension forks

Soft Tail Bikes – These bikes have frames with small amount of rear suspension. The bikes are activated by flex of the frame rather than the pivots

Fully rigid bikes – These bikes have a sub-type of hardtail along with rigid fork system

The Different Types Of Mountain Bicycles

    The Cross-Country Mountain Bike

This bike variety has small amount of suspension on the front or on the rear. These bicycles are comparatively light because they are constructed with lightweight materials both in frame construction and in components. Some XC bike varieties of this particular type are without any suspension. They make use of rigid front fork that helps in saving weight. Here, the skill of the rider to pass through rough terrains is more important.

    Freeride Mountain Bike

These are very similar to enduro bikes and emphasize more on weight and enhanced suspension. These bikes have ample suspension and they are mostly constructed with heavier materials. Freeride bikes are absolutely versatile and they are fantastic for uphill travel. The frame angles of such bikes are usually steeper in comparison to downhill bikes. Most freeride bikes are 30 to 45 pounds in weight.

    Trials Mountain Bike

These are trial specific bikes. Most of these bikes are without any suspension. The contemporary trial bikes come without seats as most of the time the rider is out of the saddle. This bike is particularly lighter than other mountain bicycles and it weighs between 15 to 25 pounds. The lightweight makes it easier for the biker to maneuver the bike.

    Single-Speed Mountain Bike

This is a kind of mountain bike with one set gear ratio. The ratio of the gear depends on the kind of terrain the bike crosses, the skill and strength of the bike rider and the size of the bike too. A single-speed bike is completely rigid having tough steel frames. If you want to ride a single-speed bicycle on mild to moderate cross-country terrains you have to be strong and active.

    North Shore Mountain Bike

North shore mountain bike is genuinely constructed for rough and rugged land surfaces. A rider of this particular bike type has to exhibit lots of skill and balance while riding the bike. This bike is a wonderful combination of freeride and downhill bikes.

The other mountain bike varieties include Enduro Mountain Bike, Downhill Mountain Bike and Dirt Jumping Bike.

Most modern bikes meant for mountains have lighter and stronger frames with innovative design and form. The geometry of these bikes encourages vigorous riding over several obstacles like logs, rocks, wooden bridges and manually fabricated ramps. In the front, the bikes have three gears and it has 7, 8, 9, or 10 gears at the rear wheel position.

Some notable companies who have introduced the latest models of mountain bicycles include Fox, Manitou and Rock Shox along with other significant bike manufacturers. It is quite likely for you to make mistakes while riding a mountain bike. The mishaps generally take place due to equipment failure or misjudgment on the part of the rider. Thus, several companies have come forward with protective gears referred to as armors to provide full protection from injuries. Some essential upper body protectors for riders include spine protector, full-face helmets and backpack hydration system.

It is quite an established fact that mountain bicycles are aptly designed following the present trend and demand. They are in fact the dream of every spirited and efficient mountain biker.

  • A mountain bike can take you off-road, whereas a road bike can have you riding around just like participants in these major road races:

    Tour De France

Lasting three weeks and covering 3,600 kms of the French countryside, this “Grand Tour” would have to be the best known cycling event in the world. The race interestingly had its origins in an attempt by a French newspaper to boost circulation by inaugurating this race in 1903. The race has individual competitors vying for the yellow jersey, the reward for the lowest aggregate time as calculated at the end of each day’s racing. American Lance Armstrong has won the race an amazing seven times.

    Giro D’Italia

This race, which first took place in 1909 was inspired by the Tour De France, and joins the latter as one of the three “Grand Tours”. A pink jersey signifies the current overall leader of the Giro, while other jerseys are bestowed upon the best mountain rider, and the best young rider (under twenty five). Starts and finishes have often centred on Milan, but this has changed from time to time. The race predominantly takes place in Italy, but often spreads into neighbouring countries. Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi, and Eddy Merckx have each won the Giro D’Italia five times.

    Vuelta a Espana

The last of the three “Grand Tours”, the Vuelta a Espana began in 1935. Like the other two Grand Tours, increased newspaper circulation was a prime motivation in getting the event off the ground. The event sputtered in its early years, initially due to the Spanish Civil War and World War Two. It has been a constant event in the annual cycling calendar since 1955. In the earlier years, limited numbers of overseas riders participated in the event, but this has changed over the years. Still, Spanish riders have dominated the event, winning 29 years of the now annual event. French riders are a distant second, having won the event nine times.

    UCI Pro Tour

This tour is technically a series of events, predominantly held across Europe, but with one event as far away as Australia (Tour Down Under). It includes all the Grand Tours and large stage races like the Tour de Suisse and Paris-Nice. Major one day races like the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Belgium), and HEW Cyclassics (Germany) are also incorporated. The Union Cycliste Internationale oversees the tour.

    World Championships

UCI also administers World Championships, which cover various disciplines of cycling, including road, track, mountain bike, BMX and Indoor Cycling Championships. World Cycling Champions in each category are awarded a Rainbow Jersey to wear for the following twelve months.

    Olympic Cycling

The Olympic Games is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world. Cycling plays a major part in the Olympics. In addition to a road race, there are many velodrome located events. In addition to individual and team pursuits and sprints, the Olympics feature interesting events like Keirin (originating in Japan) and Madison (originating in New York, USA).

If you are more into stunts than cycling, bmx bikes might be your thing.

  • Sonic wasn’t just enjoyed in normal side scrolling game fashion. There were quite a few off shoot versions that featured Sonic and crew. Things like Sonic Spinball, Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, and Sonic 3D Blast. These games definitely weren’t along the traditional lines of the Sonic series, and seemed to play off of popular games or concepts of the time.

While one or two of the off shoot games were no more than Sonic games in “branding only” as Sonic himself didn’t appear in them, they did feature Sonic characters and although they did not feature any story line enhancements, they did give fans of those characters a little taste of fun. They gave them a little fun when usually Sonic was the featured member of a majority of the games.

    Were These Games Successful?

It’s hard to measure the success of a game that doesn’t forward storylines or really offer anything to the series other than fan pleasure.

These games were not some of the most fantastic sellers in the series, with the exception of the Mario and Sonic Olympics cross over. The pair together made a game so enjoyable that a sequel is planned for later this year themed in the Winter Olympics.

There have been many next gen system versions of the Sonic games. They have slowed morphed from the side scrolling, dual button pressing adventures of old, to the 3D and complicating world of complicated and advanced gaming. Instead of just collecting things and jumping around, now you collect things, slay creatures, and use a lot more than two buttons to do all of this.

What Are Some Of The Downfalls Of These Newer Games?

Some of the downfalls are just the rapid advancement of gaming in general. The games have shifted from being focused solely on a fantastic story line and average graphics, to fantastic graphics and average thrown together story lines.

Older games always had a story that entwined the user in the game and had them always craving more. Always wanting to learn that next little bit about their character and always bringing the character to life through whatever means they could. You would actually feel bad back in the older gaming days if your character died.

These days, there are walkthrough videos, cheat codes, and other methods of just racing through a game with little effort. These work a rounds cause the game experience itself to degrade. When you can put in a 10 or so length code and be done with a game and see the “ending” instead of spending numerous hours at the TV working through it with much pain and annoyance and gaining a bond with your on screen “you”, then it is nothing but simply another game.

The most unique and pleasing games allow you to relate to whatever character you are controlling and immerse you in the situation that your character is going through. When you bond with a character, you go through the game rooting for them and hoping for the absolute best. When those principles get bypassed due to the short cuts and “easy mode” afforded to us by the internet and the “power gamers” that finish the game 24-48 hours after it is released and then post the chronicles of their journeys in walkthroughs and various other methods, it causes a complete degradation of the video gaming experience and in the end not only harms that title, but can also harm future titles because the enthusiasm will be lacking that is normally generated by fans that enjoy the game, but may have not gotten as much out of it due to one of the above issues.

  • There are some truly awesome outdoor bikes that are available on the market today in which adults well as children are sure to enjoy. These outdoor bikes that are available on the market today are becoming the best and most highly sought after bikes on the market today and for very good reason.

One of the greatest outdoor sport bikes on the market today is the Cannondale Rize, which is an extremely fast and feather weight carbon-fiber bike that has very unique and great attention getting features. This sports bike is the quickly becoming known as the flat-out fastest climbing bike of its group due to its very shockingly light weight of twenty-four pounds. This makes this bike a medium size bike that is sleek and has an uncluttered design that cuts the fat by using its combined stem and steerer tube and famed “lefty” single-armed carbon fork.

While most bikes have fine adjustable travel forks that have lockouts, which help stop inefficient bobbing on climbs, this amazing sports bike is safer and more accessible. This is because of its simple push-button switch that is located next to the handlebar and not a half-foot reach down. Some of the dislikes of this bike is that it has quick wheel removal that is great for transport when it can be a hassle. Instead of having to pop the wheel off with a standard quick-release the owners of these great sports bikes can easily loosen the hub and the two disc-brake bolts with an Allen wrench. Also, the smallish six inch rotor on the front brake tends to give more finger fatigue on the descents than the other sports bike on the market that use seven or eight inch rotors.

In the mountain-biking world where the probability of enjoying a breathtaking descent is often measured by the distance your bike’s wheels can compress or travel when they hit a big rock, five inches of travel is always better than three or four. However, five inches typically comes on heavy, slow climbing and thirty-three pound bikes, there are some great advances in suspension design and tubing fabrication that have helped to bring big travel to nimble, sub-thirty pound bikes.

Another great sports bike on the market is the Trek Fuel EX-9, which is a high performance aluminum bike with unusual new frame configuration that is designed to maintain better traction during descents. This bike is an extremely smooth and fluid twenty-seven pound bike that does everything well, which is due to its innovative rear suspension that has a floating shock that is not directly anchored to the main frame.

This bike seems to minimize brake jack, which is the stutter-bump skidding that can occur when an individual brakes on a steep downhill. With the longest cockpit and wheelbase of any test bike, this bike puts individuals into a classic and efficient bike racer position. The only problem with this bike is that the long cockpit, which might leave the casual non-racer way too stretched out and uncomfortable.

  • Perhaps you’ve seen them on the TV doing their tricks that look so cool and effortless. Maybe you’ve seen them at the local skateboarding park. Whatever has brought your attention to the sport, you are awed by it and think that this is going to be your thing. There is only one thing that could stand in your way…MOM.

Right off there are going to be two things that pop into her mind: your safety and the cost. That is of course, if she even has knowledge of the sport. Do your research. Know before you go! Research BMX bikes. Find out which brands are the best, where you can get them and what its going to cost. Next research the safety equipment needed and it’s costs. Be prepared to earn your own money to make these purchases. Despite what you may think, parents aren’t made of money. Being able to say up front that you plan to work to pay your way to participate in this sport will show them how serious you really are. Not only that but perhaps they will be more willing to help with some of the cost later down the road.

Know the details of the sport. Let me just say here that nothing gets any parent to consider your latest and greatest interest more than having you be knowledgeable and well versed in the subject. Suppose she asks what is involved. Don’t just give the, “Well, it’s doing tricks on a bike.” answer. Talk about how this sport has been around since the 1970s and how it has evolved over the years. Mention the five categories of Freestyle BMX: Street, Vert, Dirt, Park and Flatland. Explain the differences from one to the other. Talk about the different tricks and what they entail. Don’t try to smooth over the fact that this is an extreme sport that does pose some risk of serious injuries. Just gently remind mom of other sports or activities that pose risks as well as everyday activities that given the wrong place at the wrong time can be a danger as well. Put her mind at ease and reassure her by letting her know that there are training camps and facilities available to help you learn techniques and skills.

The concern may be that this is just a phase. Perhaps it is. On the chance that it isn’t though be sure to talk about the XGames. Research the earnings for some of the stars of the sport. By all means don’t forget to mention that the 2008 Olympic games saw the addition of Freestyle BMX to its events.

Now if there was any doubt before, just the mention of the Olympics should give away that this is no slacker sport. You should expect to be physically fit and to work hard at maintaining that fitness. If you are expecting to just get on any old bike and start doing some tricks then I would suspect that you really aren’t too serious about it. If you are willing, however, to commit to physical training, studying and practicing then perhaps this is for you. If you are willing to research the sport of Freestyle BMX there is an overload of information on the internet, or go to your local library. Your local bicycle shop may be able to provide information on training or connect you with others interested in or involved in BMX Freestyle tricks.

  • Bikes that use Carbon Fiber as the majority of the components of the frame are currently the choice of sports professionals, amateur triathletes and cycling enthusiasts the world over.

As a triathlete, owning a light, fast and strong bike made from this material will allow you to complete the cycling stage of the competition in a better, faster time and set yourself a new personal best.

Carbon Fiber is a man made material that is constructed from layering several sheets of carbon together with the grain running in opposite directions to each other which gives the material amazing strength. This is also a very light material and therefore is an ideal product for making a large range of things.

The other benefit to making a bike frame from this is that the manufacturer is able to sculpt, shape and bend the design of the bike or component into any shape they like. The shape of the bike frame is usually the same, similar design you will be used to, but often made from a single piece of material moulded into a strong, sturdy design.

When buying a bicycle, it is best to first set your budget. They don’t come cheap! Bikes that are a combination of carbon and aluminum or titanium are also available at a smaller price but will not give the complete benefits to the rider. A second hand CF bike or CF frame will also be a great investment for the amateur athlete. Triathletes look after their equipment with infinite care and you can pretty much guarantee that any bike will be well maintained.

This kind of frame will be a costly investment, but after you have had one you will never go back.
