BMX bikes

All about bmx bikes

  • The bicycle is one of the best tools to use to burn calories and lose weight. A 145lb woman riding 1 hour at about 12 MPH will burn about 500 Calories, up the speed to 16 MPH and the calorie burn increases to about 835 Calories per hour.

    You can increase calorie burn by doing sprints now and then during the ride.

    Since it takes 3500 Calories to burn a pound of fat, then about 4 hours of cycling at 16 MPH will burn roughly enough calories to burn 1 pound of fat.

    Cycling is very low impact, so it does not take the toll on the joints like running does.

    Cycling can be done indoors on a stationery bike when the weather is bad, with little or no change in your calorie burn.

    Personally I find indoor cycling on a stationery bike boring, but some find it quite fulfilling and there are now simulation machines that make it seem as if you are going on a course rather than just riding the bike. Some of these work with a trainer and increase resistance when going up hills and offer a variety of course to keep the boredom down.

    You can use the bicycle to do some errands and at the same time burn some calories that you would never have had the chance to do otherwise. The use of a small bicycle trailer increases the number of calories burned as well as offer more opportunities for errands since you can carry much more and that allows you to expand the errand you can do.

    What I mean by that is that with my trailer I can carry up to 100 lbs. of groceries or tools or whatever. I have carried week’s groceries back from the supermarket. Pulling a 100lb load up even a small hill will put a lot of extra resistance on the pedals and improve your leg strength.

    Most people think of the bicycle as a totally cardio workout, but that is not always true. Taking you bike up hills, especially with the extra load of a trailer will definitely increase leg strength and it will also be a great way to strengthen your core.

    If you ride BMX or Mountain Bike then you will also build some upper body strength and your will burn a lot more calories than if you just ride casually.

    Depending on the type of cycling you plan to do there may be some preparation needed and will depend on what type of bike you want to buy.

    You should check with the local shop, they are usually very helpful. Yes they want to sell you a bike, but most shops realize that they want to make you happy even more and if they sell you something that does not fit, you won’t come back. Since they need your repeat business in order to stay in business they will almost always do their best to make the bike you buy be the bike you will ride.

    Here are some general rules, but not always a perfect fit since every individual is different.

    Buy a road bike if you are wanting to lose weight, get fit, would like to ride with groups and enjoy the speed and agility of road biking in general. If you do that also check with the shop about how to get into the local bike club or group and have fun getting fir. I am a member of the Pecan City Pedalers in Albany Georgia and also have contacts in clubs all over the US. I very much enjoy road biking.

    Buy a comfort bike or hybrid if you are just interested in fitness and don’t mind riding alone, don’t really care about speed but just want to burn calories and get fir. These will usually have narrower tires so they will go a little faster. They are a sort of cross between a Mountain Bike and a Road Bike.

    Buy a Mountain Bike if you live in an area where there are a lot of back roads that are not paved, road bikes and hybrids don’t do the loose gravel and grass thing as well as mountain bikes do.

    Cruisers are OK, though not my own choice. That was the main type of bike that existed when I was a kid. These are sort of single speed bikes like we had back in the 50′s and 60′s Would be Ok for tooling around town, but they can be really rough on hills.

    BMX Cruisers or 20″ for racing. Racing BMX can be done at any age and after the first few times around the track you will either love it or hate it. Most children love it, adults not so much. Personally I enjoy it and love riding and even racing with my grandchildren. It gives a great workout and after 3 Motos (1 race) I feel like I have gotten a good workout.

    If you try BMX, rent a bike or borrow one, most tracks have them at the track and will rent or loan one for a practice race. Once you have tried it you will have to decide for yourself if it is for you. BMX Racing is not for everyone, but everyone is welcome to try it. I think it is a lot of fun, but maybe when I get old (I am only 57) I will think differently.

  • Biking across town or across mountain terrain keeps you physically fit. Intense physical exercise helps increase your metabolic rate as you decrease your risk for ongoing health issues. Conducting physical activity is one of the best ways to combat disease and depression.

    It is well known that water intake during physical exercise is crucial to prevent dehydration and overheating of the body. An increase in perspiration as it removes heat away from the body depletes bodily fluids and must be replaced. Your body needs water and pushing yourself without attending to those needs can cause heat stroke and even more critical health issues.Serious athletes like long distance runners and cyclists know that carrying a water bottle is a necessary way to stay close to water during the activity. But, a water bottle can be clunky and interfere and be a distraction.

    Backpacks and waist type fanny packs and things you can wear are becoming more popular for resolving this issue. Many companies now offer these products originally for soldiers in the field. The pack design contours to your back offering a food fit and minimal shifting during exercise. This is more popular for cyclists and skiers. Runners gravitate toward the waist level version for long distance applications. These systems carry enough water to help the runner go further without having to stop for fluids along the way.

    In summary, if you are looking for a way to ditch the water bottle, a hydration system for the back or waist may be the answer.

  • A popular style of bike that is coming back into vogue lately is the low rider bike. Unlike standard bikes, that people may use for exercise or transportation, they add comfort and style to the biking experience. For many, riding one is more than just a hobby, it is a lifestyle. Through their bikes, many enthusiasts find a way to express their own personality. There are those who think nothing of spending thousands of dollars on sound systems, individualized hydraulics, and beautiful murals to their low rider bikes. The thrill of building or customizing a low rider is almost as important as riding it and showing it off to admirers.

    Many of these bikers join together to form clubs. There is a great advantage to joining such a club, since it gives the bikers a chance to feel that they belong to a community, and they can share all of their ideas and find resources for improving their low riders. For the younger set, it is a great way to meet new people while learning a great skill and getting exercise doing it. These clubs are also very active in organizing biking competitions. These competitions allow the participants to showcase their bikes and their skills, as well as meet people from all over the country.

    If you remember the popular show from the sixties “The Munsters”, you will remember that Eddie Munster rode one of the earliest low rider bikes ever seen. His was a Stingray style bike by Schwinn, but customized by George Barris to the unique low rider contours. This has remained, since the sixties, one of the most popular styles of them. When mountain bikes and BMX bikes came into popularity in the eighties, the sport of low rider bikes fell out of favor with the biking public, but they are coming back into style once again, both for young bikers who like the sportiness of them and for older bikers who like the stylishness of them.

    If you decide to get in on this great sport, there is a wide range of choices open to you. Many people like to buy the components and build their own customized low rider bike. All of the resources, including instructions as will as parts, can be easily found on various sites on the Internet. If you are not handy, you can have a customized bike made for you, by giving the specifications you are interested in. Clubs often have their own websites that have a wealth of information on the topic. They will usually have a section showing all of the members’ mountain bikes, so you can get great ideas for designs. Of course, mountain bike manufacturers websites will also have all of the information you may need. It is well worth boning up on this topic before you make the commitment to buy or build a low rider bike, so you have a full understanding of the sport, and can therefore enjoy it for a long time to come.

  • Travelling with your bike can be a healthy form of exercise, not to mention fun and environment friendly. When travelling using this form transportation though, especially on long trips, you may need to take more stuff than your backpack can accommodate. Good thing bike bags can be attached to your bag to help carry your stuff.

    There are a variety of travelling containers you can install on your bike to make your biking trip easier. Here are a few you may consider:

    1. Handlebar bags – these are attached to your bicycle’s handlebars using clamps of straps and can carry maps, cameras, water bottles and other small items. These are convenient as they are also easily detached. There are some designs that come with transparent map cases so you can check on your map without stopping. Do not fill it to the brim with stuff though as it could interfere with your steering and make sure that the big fits perfectly so as not to affect shifting or breaking.

    2. Saddlebags – these can be fitted directly under the saddle and can hold small items. These small-capacity bags are advantageous if you want one that is easy to rich into and does not contribute much wind resistance. They also offer easy access to items like money, tool kits and the like. They may have limited capacities but they are perfect for short trips.

    3. Panniers – these bike bags attach to racks using a system of hooks and springs. These baskets are preferred by riders who are touring since they have bigger carrying capacities. Some panniers are even waterproof, perfect for people who tour a lot. These can be placed in the front or rear part of the bike and can carry more gear than other bags. With panniers, it is easier for a biker to ride while balancing his bike’s load. The only problem is that these carriers are not easily accessed and when full, they tend to add to the wind resistance which can affect control and steering. Bigger sized panniers should come with dividers, compartments and pockets to make them easier to organize. These can be bought with bike racks or separately.

    When buying bike bags, always consider their accessibility, capacity, adjustability and resistance to water. You should also think about factors like additional features and balance. Always make sure that these bags are securely attached to your bike and that there is no danger of them getting unattached while riding and prevent the risk of losing your stuff.

  • Every child goes through a phase of desperately wanting to take up hobbies which their parents would really rather they had never heard of: round the world yachting, polo, sword swallowing, rock climbing or maybe even ultimate fighting. BMX biking is one of the most popular, quite dangerous, parental hair-raising hobbies which a child could take up. BMX riding can involve stunts and tricks, jumping, half pipe and skate park riding and even big air jumping. But if a child is suitably sensible and doesn’t go trying to leap over buses, then supporting your child’s BMX aspirations may not be the worst hobby they could take up.

    To help your child stay safe and to assist them on their quest for BMX stardom, you should think about providing them with the following:

    Safety Gear

    Of course you want your child to be safe, especially if you think they will be trying to leap over their friends the moment your back is turned. So you will need to get them some safety gear. Having good BMX pedals and BMX grips will help them stay on the bike. While getting them a proper BMX helmet, some elbow pads and some knee pads will help you worry less.

    Extras

    The best way to keep them safe however, is to get them to do their biking at a proper skate park. That way they will avoid traffic and pedestrians and may even be in a place monitored by first aiders. Another option would be to build a ramp or trick box for them in your back garden. It is possible to buy these online or to try and build one yourself.

    Bike

    There are many places to buy cheap kids bikes but when getting your child a BMX it is best to go to a proper bike store which can assess the correct size of bike for your child. BMX bikes are simple bikes with one gear and tend to be bit cheaper than their mountain style counterparts. But of course there is always a market for super fancy versions of everything. You should convince them to make do with a cheap BMX bike to begin with so that they can at least see if they really do like it before opting for a more expensive option.

    Opt for a quality brand like Raleigh, Bumper or Freespirit and you know that it will stand the test whatever your child puts it through.

  • Learning how to change a bicycle tire and tube is one of the most common and easiest repairs you can do on your own. Whether you need to change a flat tire on the trail or want to replace an old tire, this tutorial is for you.

    Tools needed: Tire Lever, Tube.

    How to Change a Bike Tire and Tube:

    1) Remove wheel from bicycle.

    2) Deflate or remove air from bicycle tube.

    3) Use your tire lever and hook the outer edge of the bead.

    4) Pull the tire lever around the bicycle rim, such that the tire bead pops out.

    5) Remove tire and tube, such that you remember its exact positioning on the bicycle rim. (This will aid in locating the cause of the puncture).

    6) Slightly inflate the tube to approximately 15 psi and inspect for puncture location.

    7) Once the puncture location is found, look in the same spot on the tire and the rim. Often times, a thorn or nail could have penetrated the tire and caused the puncture. It is also important to make sure that the rim tape is in position and in good shape. Often times, the spoke nipple will protrude and cause a puncture in the tube.

    8) When you have determined what has caused the flat, make the appropriate repair.

    9) Grab your new tube and inflate just enough to give the tube shape.

    10) Place the slightly inflated tube inside of the bicycle tire.

    11) Orient the tube and tire such that the valve stem is inserted into the rim first.

    12) Slowly roll the bead over the rim with your thumbs. (Do not use tools! This could cause a pinch flat!).

    13) Inflate the tube to approximately 20 psi and fondle the tube all the way around the rim to ensure it is seated properly.

    14) Inflate tire to appropriate pressure. (i.e. 40 to 60 psi for most mountain bike tires).

    Tips:

    * Wear ear and eye protection. Note that it is possible for a tube to pinch or explode during installation. Anyone who has changed enough bike tires and tubes has at one time or another had it explode near their face.

    * When installing the tube and tire, make sure the valve stem stays in place. Any unusual strain on the valve stem could cause a pinch or flat.

    * When inspecting the tire for foreign objects, it is sometimes best to turn the tire inside out. This will allow you to inspect the tire thoroughly.

  • Having trouble getting that arena rating up? All the arena matches you take part of seem to be lost? If that is the case, then I believe that you lack the guidance of a WoW arena guide. In the following report I will give you some tips and tricks that will help you get better at arena fights. This is my WoW arena guide.

    What you need to perform successfully in arena

    Not many WoW arena guides will tell you this, but you cannot just enter an arena and win. You need to prepare first. Here are some things you need to get and get used to in order to increase your speed when using abilities:

    MOD’s
    MetaHUD, Proximo, CooldownTimers2, TotemTracker, PurgeHelper,Antagonist. If you aren’t using these mods then make sure you get them and get used to them as they are crucial to any player.

    Keybind your abilities and skills
    Keybinding is a very useful tool which you have to use in order to get faster at casting stuff, using abilities and items. It can be very hard to get used to using them, that’s why some people gradually use them. That is a big mistake as you will take longer that way, put them all in and start using them in PvE until you are comfortable with them. You will then see major changes in your arena fights, positive changes.

    Macros
    Making macros will enable you to cast a spell or several spells with the touch of a button. They aren’t hard to make and will make a very big difference in the fights. As keybinds, macros will help you in becoming faster when playing. The only thing that stops people from using them is laziness, they can be tricky to use, but once you get used to them, you will increase your win/loose ratio considerably.

    Focus
    This is one of the most important tools to use in an arena fight. Setting your focus on a player will enable you to see everything he is doing. You can also keybind spells and make macros so that you can cast spells on your focused player without having to target him. Making best use of this tool in 2vs2 is absolutely vital to your team. You can do damage to your target and still keep an eye on the player that you have set your focus on. This tool is also extremely useful in the 2 other brackets available in the arena. There are WoW arena guides that have whole pages on this tool telling you how to use it best.

    Knowledge is power
    As the saying goes, knowledge truly is power, especially in WoW. Knowing what your enemy can do is another vital aspect in arena PvP. You should get familiar with every class and their skills and every talent build they could possibly have. Once you have mastered this you will never be taken by surprise and you’ll know how to approach every battle. Just keep in mind that the enemy will probably know as much about you as you do about him, so try and be a little unpredictable.

    Communication
    Communication is vital in every aspect of life. Wow is no exceptions. Using some sort of voice chat will hasten your teams reactions. You can call out for additional crowd control, ask for help when needed and other stuff without having to type. Stopping to type in the middle of the fight is certain death for you and your team.

    Use the right gear
    Everyone is trying to get as much resilience as needed when they do arenas. I say that is wrong, resilience should only be used by defensive classes. A damage dealing class should concentrate on getting items that will further his offensive powers even more. There’s nothing worse than a rogue that dropped attack power for better defenses. When an offensive class is going for defensive items it usually ends up being gimped. To be successful in arena you must further improve that which you do best.

    Talent Builds
    If you just finished leveling, don’t even think about going to do arenas with the talent build you have. In order for your talents to actually help you in arena PvP you must look for specific PvP builds. Don’t think that if your spec was good in PvE it will be good in PvP too, cause it wont be. PvE and PvP are two extremely different things.

    If you get all of those preparations done before going into an arena, everything should be a lot smoother.

    General tips to improve your arena performance

    -before entering the queue make sure you have everything you need on you because as when you are inside, you wont be able to switch equipment and stuff like that;
    -always do one or two warm up runs in arena skirmish modes;
    -when the fight starts, don’t charge the enemy. Be cool and see what you are up against, come up with strategies and relay them to your team mates;
    -use every crowd control spell you have wisely, don’t just throw the CC spells at the target you are hitting;
    -always go for the weaker targets, trying to kill something like a warrior first will get your team killed as they are very sturdy;
    -if you are a caster, don’t go easy on your mana, use it, dump it all on the enemy. If you don’t use your full damage potential because you want to save mana, you will die;
    -if you are the leader of your team, act as one, even if you make bad decisions, stick with them until the end.

    Anyone who follows these general tips will improve at arena PvP. Though as not as detailed as in a WoW arena guide, they did wonders for me. If you are having trouble following and using what I wrote here, I’m sure that a WoW arena guide will help you.
